THREE LETTER ACRONYMS (TLA)
Oltre agli smiley esiste un altro linguaggio che viene utilizzato nei messaggi
di Posta Elettronica, nei Newsgroups e durante i talk o in IRC (Internet Relay
Chat).
Esso è denominato TLA (Three Letter Acronym) e il suo scopo è
quello di accelerare la composizione dei testi.
Gli acronimi che, in realtà, sono molto spesso formati da più
di tre lettere sono costruiti in lingua inglese, che rappresenta la lingua ufficiale
di Internet.
Le TLA vanno scritte sempre in maiuscolo e senza punti di separazione. Non sempre
gli acronimi fanno riferimento a delle parole scritte: molto spesso si riferiscono
ma ad assonanze foniche. Tipici esempi sono gli acronimi sotto riportati per
i quali viene fornita una spiegazione.
· L'acronimo CUL (See You Later) che significa Ci vediamo dopo viene
costruito basandosi sul presupposto che la lettera C in inglese si pronuncia
allo stesso modo della parola "See" e che la lettera U si pronuncia
come la parola "You".
· La frase How r u?, che significa Come va? viene costruito sul presupposto
che la lettera R si pronuncia come la parola "are" e che la lettera
U si pronuncia come la parola "You".
· L'acronimo W4W che significa Word for Windows o Windows for Workgroups,
prende origine dal fatto che la preposizione for (per) viene pronunciata in
inglese allo stesso modo del numero 4.
Quest'ultimo pertanto, per brevità, viene sostituito alla preposizione.
· Per analogia il numero 2 che si pronuncia "to" per brevità
viene sostituito alla equivalente preposizione.
Per esempio, dos2unix che va letto come dos to unix indica un programma in grado
di convertire file ASCII da un formato DOS ad un formato unix.

SMILEYS: il linguaggio degli stati d'animo
Comunicando mediante posta elettronica non si riescono ad esprimere gli stati
emotivi che accompagnano una frase. Per riuscire, in qualche modo, ad ovviare
a questo problema, è stato inventato un linguaggio a mezzo di codici
ASCII che ha assunto il nome di emoticon o piu' semplicemente, smileys. Il primo
termine deriva dalla fusione dei termini emote e icon (che possono essere tradotti
come simbolo di stati d'animo). Smiley invece significa sorriso: infatti il
primo simbolo creato e' stato appunto una piccola faccia sorridente come quella
sotto riportata:

Per interpretare questa faccia e tutti gli altri smileys bisogna ruotare di
90 gradi a sinistra il capo.
